Retour à Lemberg et La Filière, deux enquêtes historiques couronnées de succès, ont imposé Philippe Sands comme l'écrivain de l'histoire des droits de l'homme. C'est en tant que représentant de l'île Maurice devant la Cour internationale de justice de La Haye qu'il lutte activement pour la reconnaissance d'une injustice criante, celle qui frappe l'archipel des Chagos, la « dernière colonie » britannique dans l'océan Indien.

La raison secrète : offrir aux États-Unis une base militaire sur Diego Garcia, la plus grande île de l'archipel.
